Our Story

In 2021 a group of family members and freinds from Al Jabal Al Akhdhar decided to embark on an ambitious project to painstakingly renovate three houses in the village of Al Aqer. They have taken great care to preserve the old designs and traditional architecture of the buildings.

The houses are hundreds of years old and were lived in for generations. They all provide a spectacular view overlooking the valley and the Al Jabal Al Akhdhar mountainside with its hanging terraces.

Hanging Terraces are stunning, multi-level outdoor terraces or gardens which can be found in various cultures and regions around the world. If you come upon terraces cascading down a hillside or a mountain their beauty will entice you to stop and have a look.

Hanging Terraces are built with a variety of structural supports, the most common being retaining walls made of stones, along with carefully designed landscaping. Depending on their use, they can be adorned with plants, flowers, trees, seating areas, and other decorative features which create a lush and picturesque environment.

On Al Jabal Al Akhdhar the Hanging Terraces have existed for hundreds of years. They are still being used today to grow fruit trees which produce delicious pomegranates, apricots and peaches. Crops such as onion, garlic, wheat and corn are also grown and flourish in the gardens.

Inspired by the environment surrounding Al Aqer, the friends behind the project naturally chose to call it the Hanging Terraces Guest House.

Our guest houses:

Bait Al Selah (Gun House) has a long two-meter wide corridor that leads to the lobby where you will be warmly welcomed then guided to one of the five rooms.

Bait Al Ghroub (Sunset House) is located next to the old village mosque. The house consists of a lounge area along with two rooms and a studio room.

Bait Al Shurfah (Balcony House) is located in the far west of the village and has a magnificent panoramic view over the villages of Al Ain, Al Sherijah and Al Qesha’a. The house is divided into two parts, the first one with three rooms and a restaurant while the second one has a large, extremely comfortable suite.

Each of our 12 rooms at Hanging Terraces has its own unique characteristics with a distinct view. The main floor of each house has a restaurant and café where you can enjoy your meals and the spectacular scenery at the same time.

Activities:

Our guests can enjoy a variety of activities provided by the guest house:

• Hiking between the three old villages.  An expert local guide will share his knowledge of the area during an enjoyable and eye-opening walk. 
• You can go on an adventure by trying the Via Ferrata and the Zip Line that are managed by local professionals. 
•  By joining one of our geology outings, you can enjoy learning more about Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and its rich geological past.

When you book a room at Hanging Terraces, be ready for something special. You’ll experience a traditional lifestyle in our houses where all the materials that are used are natural and don’t cause any harm to the old buildings. Like other houses built in the old days, our houses are environmentally friendly as well. They have been designed and built to stay warm in the winter and cool during the summertime. Of course, on top of that we have integrated new technology to ensure that your stay will be memorable. 

An important part of every holiday or getaway is the food. Oman is known for its flavorful cuisine and thanks to our local cooks, you’ll be served delicious traditional meals.
